What resources do you need to learn and/or research?
PROMPT: Imagine a civilization where the primary instinct is not survival, conquest, or reproduction—but documentation.
On this world, every sentient creature is born with a biological imperative: to observe, collect, research, and record. Knowledge is their nourishment. Discovery is their migration pattern.
Young beings—called Learners—scatter across their planet and beyond, cataloging everything: mineral compositions of asteroids, the mating songs of methane-breathing leviathans, the emotional languages of neighboring species, the taste profiles of extinct fruits reconstructed from fossil spores.
But they do not keep what they gather.
At specific intervals in their life cycle, Learners return to their Elders—vast, ancient beings whose bodies have evolved into living repositories. The Elders’ neural architecture resembles neon black holes. Their memories are not linear but orbital. When a Learner deposits knowledge, they are absorbed by the black hole and come out an elder on the other side, once their knowledge has been absorbed. They then have access to all the knowledge of the elders.
The Elders then transmit compressed knowledge streams to interstellar vaults—massive archive stations. These Archives are accessible across solar systems. Any sufficiently advanced species can “tune in.”
Design this knowledge-ecology:
What evolutionary pressure made documentation the dominant survival trait?
What happens if a Learner withholds information? Does their body destabilize?
Are there forbidden categories of knowledge—extinction codes, weapon schematics, cultural traumas?
How do the Elders decide what is transmitted universally and what remains local?
Do other solar systems contribute back, creating a galactic commons?
